But right now, a mid-late '90s Celica is the top of my list, so I can do this. I want an awesome rally car that's also not as common as Lancers and Imprezas. And I want it to work, so don't even think of suggesting a Lancia.
Now, it's also possible that I'll get my grandparents' Ford Escort if it turns out that my grandma's recent surgery has left her unable to drive, (sure that's sad, but there are much worse ways to inherit a car) so that would solve that. But otherwise, I want a Celica with dirt on it.

Both these are good options. Being a Ford fan you know which way I am leaning. However if you can get your hands on a gt four do it.

Being as it's #panthursday, I'm obligated to say "get and rally an LTD!!11!one". If, however, an Escort, I'm sure Tohru has some ideas on making one rally-worthy.

That's one of my future projects for sure! Preferably a Police Interceptor turn taxi turn civilian car. I want it to have a taste of EVERYTHING.

Here's the deal with the 5th generation celica

Unfortunately the GT and it's little brother the ST are some of the most underpowered sporty coupes to ever leave the factory. We're talking 135hp max here. They handled okay i guess, but there's almost nothing there from a performance car standpoint to get excited about. Fuel economy should be good at least....

The Celica All-Trac is about a billion times more rare, especially in the U.S. This is unfortunate because it makes 200 hp and is awd. It is also hell to work on, incredibly complex and still doesn't really handle all that well without some modifications. Still it's an old rally car so coolness factor is through the roof.

If you have some mechanical ability, an all trac engine (3SGTE) will fit nicely in the FWD celica GT, making a turbocharged somewhat quick front driver. It is the same engine that was used in the MR2 turbo so it's not incredibly rare or anything.

Alternatively, if you're really good, people have had success swapping Camry V6's into 5th gens as well.

Celica Supra.

I want to get a newer car this time around, though, and the only Supra that really fits that category is the one I can't possibly afford. Otherwise I would definitely grab one.

They are actually pretty good on gas. About 20-30 combined mpg depending on the specific year and trim. So that's a plus.

As for engine swaps, it's possible. I'd have to see if it's possible to use the equipment in my school's FSAE garage or if they have another garage dedicated to automotive classes, which I'm actually not sure whether or not they offer... In either case, I'm definitely working on a tight budget so it's not going to go to an actual shop where I need to pay. Either I and/or my friends will do everything, or I'll be lucky enough to have it done by someone else as an assignment for one of their classes. And that's only if I do get a car any time in the next year.

Yeah, I didn't mean to make it sound like a bad car. Its a great car, its just not a high performance car in stock configuration.

I've never done or attempted an engine swap on one (my experience comes from reading TONS of stuff in various celica forums, and driving a few at various celica meet ups. I used to own a 4th gen celica all-trac) but as far as engine swaps go, i believe its fairly straightforward. Good luck with whatever you end up getting!
